Personal Enemy #1

Ever had one of those nights where you try to sleep — change positions, fluff the pillow, do a complete 180 in the bed to see if that’s more comfortable. — only to pop back up and decide, “Hey, I’m going to go online and write a blog post about my insomnia!” Well, you’re in luck ’cause you’re not alone.

Wait…. Okay, maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about food and how much I like to eat it because, you know, food tastes good (Warning: Not all food tastes good. Particularly that meat surprise casserole that “some people” think qualifies as food). When I’m not writing my fingers down to the bone or wasting time online or watching shows that waste my time… 20 things-that-waste-my-time later… I’m trying to make something that tastes good.Okay, that sort of wastes my time as well but I do need to eat; keep my strength up to do all that writing and time-wasting stuff.

And, where am I going with this?

Oh, yes, here’s my point — FOOD IS TAKING OVER

For example, there was a scene in my work-in-progress involving earmuffs (minds out of the gutter). One second I’m typing away and then the image in my mind of the fluffy earmuffs leads to a thought. That thought lead to another thought and another though.

Why are you writing about your protagonist getting earmuffs when you could be eating something? Delicious food. FOOD. Tasty FOOD. YUM.

Food is my enemy number one on the distraction list at the moment. Why do I have to go roam the kitchen every time I get up from the computer? Even at this moment, I’m anticipating what I’m going to eat as soon as I get up from this computer. *Sigh*

So, wanting to eat isn’t so much the problem as the fact that I haven’t given myself much time to select anything healthy since this writing challenge began. Word of advice — don’t do that. Therefore, I’m making a new goal from here on out. Cease the junk food munching and have more veggies on my plate. Let’s face it. No matter how many people may have the illusion that artists are supposed to be starving, on drugs, worn out and/or mildly insane I don’t fit into that image. Except for, perhaps, the insane part…. and, I don’t have much defense for the worn out part at the moment, considering I’m writing this blog instead of sleeping.

You can add this little tidbit to your list of things to know before attempting a writing marathon, though you’re probably way wiser than I. You don’t need to be told to eat well while you write, right?

Going to go be unconscious for a little while now….ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Slumpity Slump Slump

This week has started off very slowly. My motivation to get anything done is extremely low, so I’ve spent several hours getting practically nothing done. Oh, what a lazy bum I am. What can I do to kick myself into gear? I thought of posting something, so here I am.

Today, I made what essentially looked like an oil spill on a plate. Fortunately, it didn’t taste like one and I was surprisingly compelled to go for seconds and then thirds. It wasn’t the best thing in the world — might have been better, had I bothered to get pork/beef and more potatoes — but the flavor was interest enough that I didn’t feel like discretely dumping it into the garbage and airing out the house to hide the evidence.

Anyway, still counting down to Camp NaNoWriMo. I want to get a few things out of the way before it starts, like cleaning and organizing. There is nothing like a dusty room to distract you from writing. When you have to sit and think, suddenly all these things that need to be done around the house are noticed. I’ll probably spend some time outside and elsewhere to help with that as well. Can’t notice what needs to get scrubbed or swept at home when you’re not at home, can you?

*Very Long Sigh*

*More Sighing*

Bah, I hardly feel like doing anything! What do you do when you’re in a slump, eh? Anyone?

Eat. Sleep…..

Food = Love

So, kinda sad that no one wanted to share anything on my last post. Oh well… If anyone wants to now, go right ahead. I still want to hear!

Now onto other things.

Yup, it’s been a while since I last updated. Sorry about that. I’m here now, though, and I’m ready to rant, babble, gush, etc. Recently I had a birthday. *cue happy birthday music* It was pretty nifty. Turned into a sort of birthday week, really, because people’s schedules were all over the place. On the actual day of my birthday I celebrated by eating lots of good food and having desserts sort of forced on me — not that I’m complaining. A family member made me breakfast, then I went out with the grandparents for lunch and then out for dinner with a group. I know this might seem strange coming from a girl, but if you want you win my heart you’ve gotta go through my stomach. I won’t say no to the occasional piece of jewelry — not much of a jewelry wearer, though — or thingamajig but I like food the most.  And, well, books are up there too now that I think about it.

Speaking of food, I’ve been itching to try Korean food for a while and finally got one of my sisters and my mom to accompany me. This was the day after my birthday, but also another birthday meal so they granted me this one adventurous meal. Well, it was adventurous for them. They weren’t big fans. I personally scarfed down as much as I could, except for maybe the potato salad. That was probably the only side dish that they ate all of that I didn’t care much for. It was okay, it just happened to be on the bottom of the list for me.

I can’t remember the names of everything I had but I did order spicy Bulgogi. That came with soup, rice and daily side dishes. The side dishes were the potato salad, spicy fish cake Bokkeum (매운 어묵 볶음), and what I think was cucumber NaengGuk (오이 냉국). Those are pretty “tame” for American taste buds, but apparently not tame enough for my family members. Oh, and there was also Kimchi and Radish Kimchi. I was probably the only one that touched that more than once.

The final verdict on Kimchi? I like it. It seemed kind of fresh to me, though I’ve never had it before so I can’t tell what fresh really is. I liked the Radish Kimchi better, but both were good. Not as spicy as I thought it would be. All of it, actually, wasn’t as spicy as I thought it would be and I even ordered the spicy Bulgogi.

I must sound crazy, rambling on about food, eh? You could say that I experience cultures through their food. Most of the places I want to visit are on my list because there’s something there I want to eat. And after trying a Korean restaurant here, I’m more than eager to visit South Korea in the future. I only wish that my family was more keen on the food. *sigh* I’m going to have to find someone else to join me for meals. My family is filled with picky eaters and when we go out to eat together it’s usually Italian or Mexican food.

Anyway, I finished up some work over the weekend and have been winding down from it this week. Got to say, I’m probably not going to do that kind of work for a while. It stresses me out too much, for some reason. Perhaps it’s the monotony of it. You’re basically writing the same thing over and over, and it really gets to me. I’d rather hit my head against the wall repeatedly than do that every day.

And thus ends my blog post. Birthdays, food, head banging. All in all a normal life here. See ya!

EAT. Sleep. Read. Write. Repeat.

Wait, I’m writing a story, right?

There is little sense in what I am writing at this moment in the challenge. Very little.

I’m sure something will eventually click, but right now I’m just writing, writing, writing. A new scene pops into my head, it goes in. I have a strange dream the night before, it’s going in there somewhere. The characters are changing and it’s beginning to look as if I may have more than one story on my hands by the end of this.

Meanwhile, I baked a pot pie… thought you should know.

Pot Pie

The not so beautiful, but pretty tasty pot pie I made

What can I say, I was kind of bored and there was leftover turkey in the fridge.
pot pie slice

I wish there had been more filling, but it was still good 🙂
